Learn Design, Illustration, and More With Skillshare

We are pleased to announce that Skillshare is offering readers of Contemporary Art Daily 2 free months of Skillshare Premium. For those who don’t know, Skillshare offers video-based courses in creative fields taught by expert practitioners, with a growing library of over 15,000 classes. I’ve always been fascinated by design, for example, in particular the design of corporate identities, and I suspect many people interested in contemporary art are too. Artists are constantly thinking about and referring to the ways that forms take on meaning, and how the identity of an artist is represented and talked about. I sometimes make analogies all too confidently to design and branding when discussing these issues even though my knowledge about the practice of identity design, dynamic identity systems and branding is thin.

When Skillshare decided to sponsor us, I was happy to find a course that I’m genuinely excited by: Dynamic Brand Identity with Paula Scher. I know just enough to know that Scher is a legendary designer at Pentagram who has crafted countless logos and identities I recognize. This course is detailed and serious but also general enough that a non-practitioner like me can follow her. If you’re here, you’re presumably interested in learning about contemporary art, so please consider using your 2 free months of Skillshare Premium to continue learning about other creative fields that interest you. -Forrest

Images: Images courtesy of Gisela Capitain, Cologne. Photos by Simon Vogel. Press Release: Galerie Gisela Capitain is delighted to present its seventh exhibition with the american artist Zoe Leonard. In the presented group of works from 2016, themes of dislocation, statelessness and alienation are explored as both personal experiences and social conditions. 1952 or 1953 is the first work the viewer encounters in Zoe Leonard’s exhibition Misia, Postwar. It is a photograph of a photograph that shows a hesitantly smiling young woman in front of a map of Europe. Leonard photographed the black-and-white portrait from–as the title says–1952 or 1953 with a disproportionately wide, gray border, which lends a lost appearance to the likeness of the elegan...

Artist Shows That Putting Googly Eyes on Inanimate Objects Never Gets Old

Ah yes, eyebombing, the street art equivalent of drawing a funny mustache on Mona Lisa. So ubiquitous it’s impossible to credit anyone for inventing it… and yet for some reason it never quite stops being hilarious? Or maybe it’s just me. Probably just me. Vanyu Krastev of Eyebombing Bulgaria helps keep it alive. (via Tastefully Offensive , Quipsologies ) Update: Did you know there’s a Googly Eyes Foundation ? Supposedly they will even send you free googly eyes .
